Just a few hours after the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, the first committee was appointed to design a seal for the United States. After many revisions, on June 20, 1782, the seal was officially adopted by the Continental Congress.

Alexander Hamilton was a Founding Father and the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. A trusted aide to George Washington, he helped shape the new nation's government and economy in its earliest days.
