The women’s suffrage movement gained momentum in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Through lectures, marches, and protests, women’s suffrage supporters aimed to finally enshrine in the Constitution the right for women in the United States to vote.

After decades of struggle, the 19th Amendment was ratified in 1920. Although women could now participate in the democratic process, many women remained unable to vote well into the 20th century because of discriminatory laws.

Petitions, letters, photographs, and documents relating to the women’s suffrage movement (including the 19th Amendment itself) are all preserved and protected by the National Archives.
