Given to the United States as a gift from Japan in 1912, the cherry blossom trees that surround Washington, DC’s Tidal Basin have become a beloved symbol of the United States’ friendship with Japan and of the capital city’s unique culture. The blooming of the cherry blossoms at the end of March attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually.

The holdings of the National Archives include historical photographs of the trees throughout the years, documents related to the planting ceremony in 1912, and materials related to the annual National Cherry Blossom Festival.
