After decades of struggle, the 19th Amendment was ratified in 1920. Although women could now participate in the democratic process, many women remained unable to vote well into the 20th century because of discriminatory laws.

Petitions, letters, photographs, and documents relating to the women’s suffrage movement (including the 19th Amendment itself) are all preserved and protected by the National Archives.
