Within the National Archives holdings are some very interesting patents, ranging from doll designs, to flying machines, as well as many sports gear patents. W. Dean’s hockey stick design from 1900 is one such patent. Closely resembling the sticks hockey players use on the ice today, Dean’s patent was of a straight stick design, which after about 50 years was replaced by a curved stick design which allows players to make better passes and shots.
