Part of the White House art collection, Childe Hassam’s timeless painting from 1917 is an enduring and patriotic scene. Elegantly printed onto a hand-selected, one-of-a-kind marble stone, presented here as a clock face, it is perfect for both the home and office.
The Avenue in the Rain depicts American flags hanging on Fifth Avenue in New York City and their reflections in water after a rainstorm. It is one of 30 flag paintings by Childe Hassam that coincided with World War I. As the United States debated entry into the war, Fifth Avenue was frequently decorated with American flags. This piece was completed in February 1917, barely two months before Congress declared war on Germany on April 6.
