In floaty chiffon, the soft red, white and blue hues of the American flags in Childe Hassam’s timeless painting have a softened quality, and hang with a nice drape like that of our scarf. Part of the White House permanent art collection, this painting lends itself well to unique pieces which are offered exclusively at the National Archives Store.

The Avenue in the Rain depicts American flags hanging on Fifth Avenue in New York City and their reflections in water following a rainstorm. It is one of 30 flag paintings by Childe Hassam that coincided with World War I. As the United States debated entry into the war, Fifth Avenue was frequently decorated with American flags. This piece was completed in February 1917, barely two months before Congress declared war on Germany on April 6.
