Among the audiovisual holdings of the National Archives are more than 50,000 sound recordings, the bulk of which date from the 1930s to the present. Stemming mainly from the postwar period are recordings of meetings of government boards and committees and government-sponsored conferences. Another major category consists of the oral arguments before the Supreme Court during the 1955-68 sessions. Other types of recordings include entertainment broadcasts (usually supporting some federal activity), documentaries and dramas relating to U.S. history, recordings of political conventions and campaigns, and extensive news coverage recordings of events such as the Hindenburg disaster.
