  • During his eight years in the White House, President Barack Obama delivered more than 3,500 speeches. Like those who preceded him in the Oval Office, he was called upon to be both cofmmander-in-chief and consoler-in-chief.

The 16 speeches compiled in this handsome book have been selected with great care. The collection begins with the keynote address given by then-Illinois Senator Obama at the 2004 Democratic National Convention.

Presented chronologically, the speeches provide an overview of the causes and policies President Obama chose to champion, as well as the issues and situations he was forced to confront during his presidency. Throughout, we are reminded of Obama's mastery of words and of his dignity and confidence as an orator who grasped the power—and poetry—of those words.

The final speech is the President’s Farewell Address in Chicago on January 10, 2017. His inspiring optimism and rejection of “the politics of cynicism” exhort us to believe once again in the ability to bring about change.
