In 1970 the United States Navy Sea, Air, and Land Team insignia was introduced, initially issued in silver for enlisted personnel, and gold for officers. The silver SEAL insignia was abolished in 1978 and since then the gold Special Warfare insignia has been in use. It is one of the few insignia issued to both officers and enlisted personnel and is comprised of an eagle clutching a U.S. Navy anchor, a trident and old style pistol.
Approved insignia designs and seals are held in trust by the National Archives in the Military holdings.
