The origins of what we now call the thermos lie with Sir James Dewar in 1892. Dewar's design was quickly transformed into a commercial item in 1904, when two German glassblowers discovered that it could be used to keep cold drinks cold and warm drinks warm. They renamed the Dewar flask the thermos.
According to the Records of the Patent and Trademark Office 1836-1973 in the National Archives, the thermos was patented in the States as U.S. Patent number 872,795, issue date 1907-12-03.
